The inaugural Online Video Platform Summit in downtown San Jose this week was, in my opinion, a useful and important gathering. As part of Streaming Media West, the OVPSummit appeared to dominate the floor as nearly 75% of the booths were hosted by OVPs. The show was mostly attended by industry folks with a technology slant as opposed to previous years filled with sales and marketing teams heavily pitching and promoting their services.
The OVPSummit panels were all interesting but out of all of them the Monetization panel with Fliqz's very own Benjamin Wayne stood out as he, Peter Csathy from Sorenson Media, Kevin Nalty of Nalts Consulting, and Teg Grenager, co-founder of Adap.tv debated not only the viability of advertising in online video today but also the true value of online video as a marketing tool. In the video below, the third debate of the panel erupted between Benjamin and Peter regarding the production value of most online video today. Pay particular attention to the midway mark, roughly 1.5 minutes in, when Benjamin likens online publishing to desktop publishing asking if amateur video is sustainable over time. I'm not sure Peter understood the question...
